UPDATE:
Gladys reports that she and her classmates have made visits to hydraulic structures in order to study their impact on irrigation and vegetable production in nearby communities. They also visited the town of Palomar - Huayhuasi and assessed how the isolated community’s access to roads could be improved so that they can get their produce to market.

As a child, Gladys worked with her father, a bricklayer, to earn a little money. She learned a great deal working with him, and this early experience inspired her to pursue a career in construction. Gladys is currently in her 5th year studying Civil Engineering at the University of San Andres. Now she uses her newly-acquired knowledge to help her father’s construction work, as bricklayers know how to perform their tasks but may not understand the reasons for doing them. Her favorite courses are Sanitation 1 and 2, and she is interested in specializing in this field.

Gladys is the youngest of 3 children. Her mother died when she was one year old. In her free time, Gladys participates in young people's activities at her church. She likes to travel, play charango (a small Andean guitar), play volleyball and basketball. She values her personal courage and determination to overcome challenges, and knows how to work for what she wants to achieve. She is a member of INELA.

In the future, Gladys wants to support her community in the province of Aroma where there are no sewers or potable water, and the only wells are dry in the winter. She thinks about how she can meet this great need in the town where her father was born. Gladys also wants to become a teacher and then form a family.

Gladys' has had a BQEF scholsrhip since 2007. Her studies are currently being sponsored by Chestnut Hill Meeting. To find out how you or your meeting can support a student's studies, please visit our Scholarships and Sponsorships page.
