Emma 2009

Dear Friends,

Emma Condori, former scholarship student, English teacher at Colegio Emmanuel, English program coordinator,  volunteer coordinator of volunteers in Bolivia, editorial board member of QUIP's Quaker Youth Book Project, FWCC-trained translator, and willing office assistant to Bernabe (I'm quite likely leaving something out here - did we mention she's also served on BQE-Bo's scholarship committee?), has been awarded a full 3-year international student scholarship to Earlham School of Religion's Masters of Divinity program.

Internado fathers who walked and ran 6 hours in the pre-dawn rain
A permanent Home and a New Garden:
The Internado property is now ours - free and clear!! The seller traveled from Lima for the day even though his agent could have signed for him, because he is delighted with the new use the property will have.

Internado staff and students are working their new vegetable garden - on land loaned by a local supporter who also volunteers tutoring - so they can grow more of their own food and help keep costs down. (Food prices are rising rapidly in Bolivian due to widespread inflation.)

SEYM Friends at lunch April 2009

I attended Southeastern Yearly Meeting’s annual Business Meeting, held at the Life Enrichment Center  in Fruitland Park, Florida in April 2009. I was blessed in many ways. I got more information about Quakers in the U.S.  I met many friends from Florida and other states. I spent my breakfast, lunch, dinner and break time with them, telling them about the Bolivian Quaker Education Fund, my life, Quaker schools, Quaker meetings, etc.

Here is a link to an album of photos from my trip with Vickey Kaiser to Bolivia. Vickey arrived February 24 and returned March 9, and I arrived February 26 and returned March 6. http://web.me.com/ggimont/Site/Bolivia.html
We are working on a trip report that will put some of these photos in context. Meanwhile, enjoy these images of Bolivia and of BQEF's work there! Geoff Garver

Video: Meet the students at the Internado! With a special treat from the "internos" at the end.

»

This video was taken on February 26, 2009, during Geoff Garver and Vickey Kaiser's visit to the Internado. We asked the internos to tell us about how the Internado helps them. They told us that before coming to the Internado, they had to walk hours each day to get to school. Now, they told us, they have a safe, supportive environment, close to school, with plenty of friends, and they are doing better at school. Watch this video to hear it in their words - with a very special treat at the end!

Come take a video tour of the Internado in Sorata!

»

This video was taken in on February 26, 2009, during Geoff Garver and Vickey Kaiser's visit to the Internado in Sorata, Bolivia. Take this video tour of the internado to see where the Internado students (internos) sleep, study, eat and hang out with their fellow students, along with Benito, the Internado administrator, and his parents Eusebio and Maria, the Internado house parents. The Internado is a family-style weekday residence, close to the internos' school, saving them hours of walking to and from school from their remote villages (which they do return home to each weekend). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEOXqyL5SkY

New: video!! Singing and thanks for BQEF computers - Quaker school in Batallas (March 1, 2009)

»

On March 1, 2009, Geoff Garver and Vickey Kaiser accompanied Bernabé Yujra, Juan Yujra and Emma Condori to the Quaker schools in Batallas and Achacachi for the formal presentation of 10 computers that BQEF donated to the schools. The gratitude is hard to convey in a blog post - but maybe this video will give you an idea of what kind of day we had: wonderful!! It shows students from the Batallas school singing, and words of thanks from Justina Corazón. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8D5fJlN9Te4 More videos coming soon....

Vickey and Geoff at Emma Canaday English class

We started our visit at Emma Canaday school. The students were so happy for our visit, and they asked many questions in English and Spanish. Also they asked Geoff how to say some words in French.

These three students from Emmanuel school send greetings to Friends in the U.S., Canada, and England.

A Home Visit to Cabra Cancha

Manuel Cuariti is currently the student who makes the
longest walk to go home on weekends from the
Internado. Here (right) is a photo of his home in Cabra Cancha (with mother and mule), and (below) the area surrounding his home, including their cornfield.
