![]() Gloria is in her 5th year studying Social Work at UMSA, where her favorite subject is individuals and families and the relationship between education and success. She was involved in a team project “For Good Health: a Change in Attitude Toward Garbage,” which included workshops, video debates, and clean-up, reforestation, and recycling campaigns, for members of the community. | Gloria Castaño Rodriguez | ![]() |
![]() Inspired by her mother's business, Guisela chose to study economics. She is now in her 4th year studying Economics at UMSA, where, she tells us, there was a bit of campus-wide confusion during registration due to a new director and new system. But Guisela got the courses she needed, and classes were eventually straightened out and got started only a bit late. Guisela's favorite subjects are Accounting and Political Economy, because they address topics of economic trends, business capital and balances. Her mother’s business inspired her to study economics. Guisela works part-time at the FIE Bank, and is very satisfied with her work. She also participated in a project to support the women in the FIE Bank. Ivan is in his first year studying social communications at UMSA. He views communication as indispensable; he loves all the work he has been doing and considers it a great opportunity for his life. Ivan lives with his brother and his mother. His father died 3 years ago of a tumor. His mother is a modestly paid teacher for Compassion International and his brother is a student. Ivan makes films to cover some of his expenses. His family is a member of Los Amigos Yearly meeting. Ivan has had a BQEF scholarship since July 2010. His studies are sponsored by a private donor. Jairo is studying Gas and Petroleum at the Pedro Domingo Murillo Industrial School. He was inspired to choose this career by his cousin (who works in electrical engineering) and because it is an innovative field. Jairo currently works as a chemistry assistant; the position is unpaid but he will receive a certificate. In the future he wants to continue his studies in engineering. Jeanete is in her 2nd year studying Auditing at UMSA (Universidad Mayor de San Andrés). She chose this career because she loves math. Her favorite class is accounting, because she enjoys learning about revenues and expenditures, profits and losses in managing business. In the future she plans to earn a masters degree. Jeanete lives in the Callampaya area of the city of La Paz with her mother. She is the only daughter. Her mother sells food for a living, but her income isn't enough to cover living costs and Jeanete’s university expenses. Jeanete reports that her uncle motivates her and provides some financial assistance. Jeanete is a member of INELA, where she teaches girls, and is involved in youth policy. During her free time, she enjoys helping her mother, shopping or cleaning, and playing Wallyball with the youth of the church. Janete has had a BQEF scholarship since July 2010. ![]() Johnny Mamani Cruz is in the 6th semester studying Educational Sciences at UPEA (Universidad Pública de El Alto). He was inspired to study this career so he can help with family and vocational guidance. His favorite course was educational administration, because he learned research and teaching guidelines. Johnny lives in Achacachi with his parents and two sisters. His parents are farmers and can only able contribute to his textbooks. The family is a member of the Friends Holiness Church. In his spare time, Johnny helps his father and mother, and plays basketball. He greatly respects his father, who motivates him and supports his goal to be professional. ![]() Jhovana is in her 2nd year studying Education Sciences at the University of Salesiana. Her favorite course so far was psychology, where she learned about positive parent/child relationships. Jhovana is the third child of 4 girls and 8 boys, ranging in age from sixth grade to college graduates. Her oldest brother completed the Education Sciences program. Her father and mother are the Internado houseparents. In her free time Jhovana likes to do crafts, including weaving, painting and many others. She admires her parents, in part because her mother has always taught her what she could. Also, she likes the way her mother is, not participating in vain diversions. ![]() Juan has liked technology from a very young age, especially systems management. So far he has enjoyed learning about programming, database management, and network servers. He is currently in his 9th semester studying Information Sciences at the University of San Andres. Sometimes Juan works doing computer maintenance for others. He often plays volleyball or computer games in his free time. Juan tells us the person he most respects is his mother, and that he really likes when things go well, that he gives his all to make things go well. His goals include finishing his university studies and then going on to get a master's degree, so that he can be a professor at the university. Judith is in her 3rd semester studying Mathematics at the Simon Bolivar Normal School (teachers college). She chose this career because she was encouraged by her teachers and loves teaching math and dynamic games that make learning enjoyable. Her favorite course is Algebra. In the future, she wants to complete her BS degree and teach mathematics in remote villages, because children in the provinces do not like math. She lives in Villa Fatima, and takes the bus to college. Her mother is a trader and her father is ill with diabetes. Judith has 4 siblings; two brothers and two sisters. Her mother provides her with 5 Bs for bus tickets, which is not enough to cover her college expenses. | Judith Torrez Quispe | |
![]() Julian is in his 6th semester of the of the Tourism Course at the Technical School in Winay-Marka Huatajata. Fascinated by the English language and traveling since high school, Julian believes that local tourism benefits the community. He wants to specialize in being a guide and in developing tourism opportunities for communities. He is currently working with the community of Chinchaya to record the history of Tupac Katari, where there are many antique ceramics. ![]() Leonora Mamani Apaza is studying linguistics and languages at UPEA. She is on the commission of curriculum to update the Aymara language and English. She recently participated in an academic conference in the areas of English, pedagogy and Aymara, had an exhibition in General Grammar, and attended a seminar on projects. Leonora lives in El Alto, and has 6 brothers and sisters. Her mother is a widow. Leonora has had a BQEF scholarship since 2010. Her studies are sponsored by a private donor. ![]() Lourdes is in her fifth year studying Geological Engineering and Environment at UMSA. Since high school, she always enjoyed basic sciences such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry. She is also motivated by the changes that are happening in the global climate caused by people. Her favorite course is Structural Geology, because it deals with the formation of the earth, the structures, faults and folds that are related to the phenomena of the earth. ![]() Mabel is in her 3rd year studying Social Work at UMSA. When she finished her secondary school education, she considered studying Social Communication, but decided that she likes working with low-income children and families. She recently did a health practicum in a low income neighborhood that is geographically difficult to reach. There she gave an orientation on sex education, handling garbage, and family care. Mabel also gave the same presentations in schools. Her favorite course was Legislation, where she learned about the rights and duties of people, children and work in biology, psychology and spiritual matters - important considerations in her career. Mabel lives in the city of El Alto. She has four brothers and sisters. Her father is a construction worker and her mother is a businesswoman. During her free time, Mabel works with young people from the church and with her music ministry, Messengers of Peace. She also plays mini-soccer, volleyball, chess, and helps her mother. ![]() UPDATE: 10/17/11 Through her studies Magaly participated in several rewarding projects. For one project, she worked with children in jail to help them deal with the suffering experienced being separated from their mothers when they reach six years of age. With a group of six other people, Magaly was part of another project called "Joy of children and ancients at Christmas,” where they collected clothing for the children in Corocoro. In the future, she plans to complete her course of study, specialize in Social Politics and then study for a doctorate. | Magaly Quispe Yujra | ![]() |
